Memorials

The Church teaches that death marks only the end of our earthly life, while our souls continue in eternity. As Scripture affirms, “He is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto Him” (Luke 20:37-38). Christians pray for the repose of the departed as a testament to our faith in the resurrection and the continuation of our relationship with Christ beyond death. While these prayers do not alter God's judgment (*Hebrews 9:7*), they express our love and remembrance for those who have passed.

Memorial Services

A Memorial Service is a special way to pray for and honor the departed. The Church also remembers them in every Divine Liturgy. Families may submit names of their loved ones, along with the offering bread (prosforo), to be commemorated during the service. Additionally, parishioners may contribute Communion wine, olive oil, and incense for use at the altar.

Scheduling a Memorial Service

Memorial services should be arranged with the priest and are traditionally held:

  • 40 days after passing

  • 1 year anniversary

  • 3 year anniversary

During the service, it is customary for the family to bring koliva, a dish of boiled wheat symbolizing the Resurrection. As Christ said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). The preparation and sharing of koliva reflects the deep connection between death, resurrection, and eternal life.
