Altar Servers – Acolytes

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life (as) a ransom for all.” Mk 10:45

Altar servers, also referred to as acolytes, participate in the sacred work of the Church, assisting the clergy during Divine Liturgy and other services throughout the ecclesiastical year.

Acolytes serve as the liturgical representation of angels. The term “acolyte” is derived from the Greek word meaning “attendant free from sin”.  

Serving as an acolyte is a profound honor and privilege. It offers young men the opportunity to serve Christ, experience the Divine Liturgy and various other services of the Church in a unique way, and to grow in faith and devotion within the Church community. Wearing an acolyte vestment, which consists of a robe and sash (stiharion and orarion), symbolizes purity, happiness, and salvation. Accordingly, acolytes should strive to set examples of calmness, piety, and readiness to serve, embodying the angels of the Church.

All boys who display a sense of maturity and reverence, are Orthodox Christians, and attend Sunday School on a regular basis, are encouraged to join. They should arrive at Church each Sunday by 9:15 AM.
